"Pirates" is a gritty, darkly comedic pirate story with a twist.
A mix of classic pirate adventure, survival tension, and black humor, with strong hints that the women now controlling the island are far more cunning and dangerous than the invading male pirates expected.
It opens on a desolate tropical island where a lone, disheveled woman named Wendy (who wears an eye-patch, drinks heavily, and has clearly been marooned for some time) is sleeping on the beach. She’s suddenly woken by Jonas Rattler, a pirate from a longboat that has just landed. His three-masted ship is visible offshore, on fire, listing heavily, after being pounded by cannon fire in a sea battle.
Wendy at first thinks Jonas and his crew have come to rescue her, but quickly realizes the opposite: dozens of rough, desperate pirates are about to swarm the “abandoned” island she has had to herself. Panicked, she tries to hide her precious bottle of liquor and warns Jonas there’s barely enough food for one person, let alone an entire crew.
