Hero has returned from a successful fishing season. He is physically powerful, quiet, respected on the boats, but carries the weight of his late or absent father’s reputation (the elders discuss the father’s size, scars, and past trouble; Hero is literally and figuratively “his father’s son”).
Daily life is portrayed through community rituals: bonfires, traditional sweaters being knitted for protection, rugby-style games, gossip among elders, workouts at the nearly empty community center, and communal concern about taxes, warmer waters affecting the fishery, disappearing people, and old spirits.
The sea itself is a living, mystical presence: whales that take shape under the water and beckon Hero in dreams, a storm scene where he risks his life climbing the boom arm to cut free a fouled crab pot or net while the crew pulls together in a dramatic rescue of the catch.
